Mar. 29, 2023 - Ten Dollar Bill
True story:
Last week, I saw a woman with a sign asking for money at an intersection. Usually, we keep some cash in the vehicle - 5 bucks - for these occasions. However, I was alone in the truck and was unsure if we had any cash. I didn't want the woman to see me reaching into the console and coming up empty, which I would find embarrassing. I avoided her eye and proceeded ahead at the green light, assuring myself that I was justified.
This morning, I had a conversation with my spouse about seeing this woman and my response. I had also recently had a conversation with someone that suggested that there was no reason to give this money, as most of these people are able-bodied and probably scamming you. My husband and I decided that perhaps 1 dollar for the scammers and 5 bucks for people that seemed genuinely destitute and we agreed we should always give, if asked.
This afternoon, I went for my usual 'worship walk' with the dog. I have felt compelled by the Holy Spirit to pick up garbage when I see it, although I draw the line if it is on someone's driveway or it looks too grungy. The day was warm and I ended up taking off my toque and gloves. My dog had 2 poop bags tied to her harness which I sometimes use to pick up garbage too. I passed by a wet and dirty scrap of cardboard and wrapper - telling myself it was too gross to pick up, despite having 2 empty bags that I could use. I carried on and picked up a couple of cleaner things here and there and then saw a purple paper. As I reached for it I realized it was a crumpled 10 dollar bill. I laughingly thanked God and started to set forward when I felt a spiritual nudge. Holy Spirit asked me if I would go back for the garbage I missed for 10 dollars? I felt chastised and turned back to go pick up the cardboard. As I retraced my steps, I noticed my toque had fallen to the ground. How amazing is our God?! Not only did he get my attention, reward me though I was only partly faithful, he also figured out a way to show me I had dropped my favourite toque. Needless to say, I picked up that cardboard and every piece of garbage I saw on the rest of my walk! As I walked I pondered what I should spend my 10 dollars on, the first thought was Dairy Queen but my next thought was 'pay it forward'. I understood that I was to put that 10 dollars in the vehicle and the NEXT time I saw a woman with a sign I would give her all of it and let her know that God wanted her to have it.
